Five Star Stories

   Home/Change Series

It is very difficult, if not impossible, to describe Five Star Stories in a short blurb. But, of course, I'm going to give it a try, anyhow.

In a nutshell, FSS is a very long manga series set in a far away galaxy, where battles are waged using giant mecha called Mortar Headds. These are piloted by Headdliners and Fatimas, android computers who are like human women in appearance, and who are specifically designed to run Mortar Headds. Overall, FSS is the story of the God of Light, Ameraterasu, and his wife, Lachesis, who emerge victorious after an era when wars rage throughout four solar systems.

The movie version of FSS tells of how Lachesis came into being as a Fatima, how Ameraterasu struggled with his feelings for her, how he realized that he did love her, and how they came to be together. They are two beings fated to be together, in particular because Lachesis is one of the Fates, and her wish set the movie's events into motion. Ameraterasu struggled against the destiny that brought them together, not because he did not love Lachesis, but because of what it meant for her and for the rest of their universe. In the end, he finds they must be together, as Lachesis knew all along. But their coming together sets off a chain of events and begins history's slow turn toward the wars that will follow, and that will ravage not only their solar system, but three others.

Five Star Stories, the movie, encompasses the events from the first manga arc, which includes volumes 1-3 of the manga's English version. (Book I in the Japanese version.) The film, created by Sunrise and boasting character designs by Nobuteru Yuki, premeired in Japan on March 11, 1989. This is a gorgeous film. It is epic in scale and boasts delicately detailed and beautifully rendered character designs and settings. It is one of those movies that sort of sweeps the viewer along on what promises to be an adventure of a lifetime. It's certainly one of my favorite anime movies, hence why it appears in its own gallery section, in spite of the fact that this collection is likely to remain quite small.
