The Heart of the Samurai ...
Samurai 7 is, basically, an animated remake of the classic movie Seven Samurai. A village, beset by bandits, decides to hire a samurai to protect them. They send a delegation (in the form of the village priestess, her little sister, and one of the village men) to a nearby city in the hopes of finding a samurai who will help them. Unfortunately, they are poor; they can only pay the samurai in rice. After being turned down by every samurai in town, they finally manage to convince Kambei, a samurai who was on the losing side in the Big War, to sign on as their defender. Kambei then gathers six other samurai, telling the villagers it will only take seven of them to defeat the bandits and win freedom for the village.
This show follows the saga of these seven samurai as they travel to the village and fight the bandits. It explores what it means to be a samurai, and, more than that, what it means to be human ... what it means to live from day to day. I absolutely blew through this series, and I can't even begin to explain how it took me by storm. Absolutely one of the best anime I've seen -- ever -- Samurai 7 is destined to remain one of my all-time favorite shows. I'm already making plans to watch it again.
