My Brother's Keeper ...
Saiunkoku Monogatari was yet another show that took me by surprise. I was intrigued by the artwork, just from seeing rilezus and sketches in other galleries. So, I decided to give it a try. By the fourth episode, I was completely, absolutely, head-over-heels in love with this show. It's a bit hard to explain, as it's not any one thing about it that I love. But, at the same time, it's just everything. Sounds silly, doesn't it? And, I suppose it is pretty silly, in a way.
Basically, Saiunkoku Monogatari is the story of a young man who is struggling to grow into his unwanted role as emperor ... his brother, a previously-exiled prince who watches over him from the shadows ... and the girl they both love (albeit in different ways). That's the simple version, and, certainly, what you see on the surface when you look at or watch this show. Underneath that, however, is a cast of characters who are sometimes flawed, often heroic, and always, always charming and loveable. I couldn't help but fall in love with the complex relationships that move througout this show, not to mention each episode of the series seems to offer up an ever-increasing amount of political intrigue and maneuvering. All in all, it's a simple show and yet ... not so simple, either. But, I suppose that's why I love it so much.
