Darkstalkers
Home/Change Series
So Many Names ... So Little Show ...
So, Darkstalkers ... Vampire Hunters ... Vampire Saviors. A show with many names, and, yet, not so many episodes. More's the pity. Despite the fact that it has compelling, interesting characters and the beginnings of a promising plot, I think the OVA was just too short to do this concept any real justice. Instead of having what felt like a cohesive beginning, middle, and ending, the OVA seemed more like an excuse for the various game characters to show up on screen for their fifteen minutes of air time. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I love the character designs and the artwork. So, to me, it's all good.
The 4-episode OVA, entitled Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge (Vampire Hunter: The Animated Series in Japan), was drawn from a series of fighting games that contain a large cast of characters based off of famous fictional monsters. The OVA was released in 1997, and, loosely, deals with how the Darkstalkers band together in order to fight against Pyron, an extraterrestrial who has come to Earth to gather information. Pyron's "hobby" is collecting planets, and he has his sights set on Earth. Only the Darkstalkers stand in his way, and he sends out his robots to gather information on them. The Darkstalkers must stop fighting amongst themselves long enough to face this new foe.
Even though the OVA is short, nearly every game character appears in the show, even if it is only a cameo appearance.
