Saiyuki - Gensoumaden - Goku, Hakkai
Home/Change Series
Just Keep on Truckin' ...
The ever-smiling human-turned-demon who hides a sad, dark past. The always-cheerful Monkey King who never gets enough to eat. They don't seem to have too much in common, other than their cheerful, serene approach to life. Oh, and a pissy monk and a perverted water sprite. Not to mention a never-ending jeep ride and plenty of demon bashing. Hmmm ... Looks like they have a lot in common, after all.
Cho Hakkai is the demon slayer ... the man who became a demon by bathing in the blood of a thousand youkai. He is, possibly, the hardest member of the Sanzo-ikkou to really figure out. He's quiet and seems shy, and he always has an encouraging word and a friendly smile for his friends or most of the people who cross his path. He seems to function as the peacemaker of the group, often laughing and saying: "Now, now ..." when Sanzo has had enough of Goku's and Gojyo's hijinxes and is ready to reach for the paper fan or banishing gun. But this quiet, polite young man with the nice smile has a dark side, too. That smile and unpretentious manner hide some pretty painful scars, starting with the way in which he became a demon, in the first place and heading right on into the disturbing memories that make him dread rainy nights. Sometimes, in the middle of battle, his easy-going, friendly manner gives way, and you get a glimpse of the true nature that lies beneath that exterior. And, when that happens, you'd better believe that you're happy he's for you and not against you!
Born from the rocks where the earth's energy gathered, Goku seems like the most straightforward, happy-go-lucky member of our band of heroes. But, his sweet smile and easy-going nature hide a past so painful that his memories of it have been erased. To pay for crimes he's long forgotten, he was imprisoned in the earth for 500 years without aging, until Sanzo rescued him. Sanzo is his "sun", and he would follow the prissy, foul-tempered monk right into the jaws of hell. He gets as much joy out of a good fight as he does from a full platter of pork buns. At first, he might seem nothing more than the cute "mascot" of the group, but it's a mistake to sell this kid short. He can kick demon ass with the best of 'em ... better than most, actually ... and, when he loses his youkai limiter -- well, you'd just best find a really good hidey-hole until the carnage is over. Constantly hungry, unflappably courageous, unquestionably loyal, Goku is definitely the kind of guy you want at your back instead of in your face.
