Nightwalker - Shido

A Human Soul ...

I suppose it comes as no surprise that Tatsuhiko Shido is my favorite Nightwalker character. At least, it shouldn't be much of a surprise if you've taken even a small peek into the insanity that has become my NW gallery. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that draws me to Shido. I suppose part of it is how he struggles so very hard against his vampire nature in order to hang on to the last human part of himself. He seems to carry a lot of regrets over the things he has done in the past. Even though he knows he can't change them, he still struggles to attone for what he views as the atrocities he committed during his early years as a vampire. Part of that attonement is leaving behind everything in that life, including Caine, his former lover and very domineering sire. Unfortunately, he can't quite seem to get away completely, as Caine is very persistent and insists on following him, no matter where he goes. Shido has vowed never to take another human life, and he fights to keep the forces of darkness at bay so that humans can continue to live in the light, without fear.

As you can guess, Shido is a rather tragic, conflicted character. He can't change what he is, and I think he is, slowly, learning to live with that ... as well as take joy in the people and things around him. All of this makes him a very three-dimensional character, which is all the more unusual, given the show's often campy premise and overly melodramatic staging.
