Samurai Champloo - Production Copy Art
Home/Change Series
I didn't set out intentionally to build a collection of production copy artwork. In general, I prefer original artwork only, and Samurai Champloo is the only series with which I've made such a huge exception to that general rule. Even so, I would have had, maybe, 4 or 5 copy sketches for the show if left to my own devices.
But ... There was this auction on YJ. (Yep, that's always how it starts, isn't it?) Included in this auction were the few scenes that were absolute dream wishlist items for me from this show. Unfortunately, the lot of sketches was HUGE. I'm talking hundreds of sketches, literally. I bid and ended up winning -- and pretty much all of the copy artwork you see here came from that one YJ win.
Once I got all of them in hand, I realized just how darn neat these production copies can be. Sure, they are copies. I'm not denying that. But they have so much character. There are production notes, hand colored details, and, sometimes, even sticky notes. Clearly, they were used in the production process and give an interesting sort of inside peek into how that process, as a whole, works. Because of that, I decided to take the time to scan and display some of them.
