Samurai Champloo - Original Production Art

   Home/Change Series

Samurai Champloo was one of the most ... intense ... anime viewing experiences I have had in a very long time. The characters are, well, "characters", for lack of a better word. From the endearingly strange Mugen to the stoic and yet caring Jin right through to the sweeter than sweet Fuu, our traveling trio sports strong personalities, more than a few funny quirks, and plenty of angst to spare. This show is non-stop action, combined with more than a few funny moments and more than its fair share of heroic sacrifice on the part of our good guys.

Basically, SC chronicles the wanderings of three odd-ball people who were rather tossed together by Fate. Fuu was minding her own business, working in a tea house and living a nice, quiet life until Mugen and Jin show up. Within minutes after their arrival, these two guys manage to burn the tea house to the ground, putting Fuu out of a job and onto the streets, literally. Not to be daunted, Fuu decides to take this little turn in fortune as a sign that it's time for her to set out on a journey she had been avoiding for some time. And, who better to be her bodyguards than the two guys who messed up her gig in the first place? So, after a bit of creative finagling on Fuu's part, she, Mugen, and Jin set out together.

Destination: unknown.

Their mission: find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. Uh, yeah ... it might be a bit vague, but hey -- a mission's a mission, right?

Although Fuu never waivers from her goal, Mugen and Jin often seem to have moments where they're not exactly sure just what the purpose of this journey is. But, they remain good sports and stick with it until the bitter end. And, along the way, somehow, the three of them find something that had always eluded them before: friendship.

Unfortunately, Samurai Champloo was one of those shows that was difficult to collect. As far as I could tell, the studio didn't release much of the original artwork. At least, I didn't find much out there whilst trolling the internet. So I feel fortunate that I was able to grab a few nice originals here and there.
