Weiss Kreuz Gluhen

   Home/Change Series

I love the original Weiss, and I know Gluhen gets a really bad rap from most fans. But, I loved it -- so much so I could even overlook the Yohji and Omi character design changes ... if I close one eye and squint really hard. Aya is, of course, my favorite character from the original series, and I absolutely adore his Gluhen incarnation. I might like it even more than the original ... but I'm not sure. ^_~

About Rilezu Cels: As you can see from the small sketch presence in here, Gluhen was a CG show, which means it was created without the use of traditional animation cels. Instead, the animators offered post-production cels called Rilezu. These are cels created from production materials. They are done by hand, and they are one of a kind originals. Often, they will come with a matching copy background, and sometimes, they will come with the douga used to create them.

I will have to do further research to confirm this, but I believe WK Gluhen was one of the first shows where the studio offered rilezu cels for sale. Now, rilezus are pretty common, but those of us who collected from Gluhen at the beginning were kind of pioneers on the cel frontier. I think a lot of our fellow collectors thought we were totally nutso for wanting rilezu cels. I remember being mocked and teased up and down in the forums and chats for paying good money for something that, at the time, was viewed in the same category as a "fan cel". To me, it was worth every penny, because I love this show ... rilezus were what was available, as there is very little original production art from Gluhen ... and, once I had seen my first rilezu in person, well, I was hooked. They are stunningly gorgeous!

But, I guess I can see the other side, too. After all, it was possible at that time that rilezu cels would not catch on at all. Luckily, it was a gamble that paid off, as rilezu are now pretty popular (and often expensive!!) for newer CG shows. I have to admit, though, the current rilezu prices make me long for the "good old days" when Gluhen rilezu first came out. They were expensive, but, compared to today's rilezu ... I would say they were quite a bargain, indeed!

At any rate, I adore my Gluhen Rilezu. I wish I had more. Isn't that the name of the cel game? Moar! Moar! MOAR!! =D
